Lisa Nankivil’s Winter 2023 archival inkjet prints were created during a three month trip across the US. Following her successful studio based practice, she has turned toward painting, drawing and collage while traveling. To make these smaller, intimate works, an abstract rendition of a moment or place is loosely painted on 12” x 16” paper with gouache. The immediacy of painting in situ heightens observation, yet the informal means of working while traveling keeps the painting moves concise. The painted paper is cut into shapes, and through trial and error an altered composition comes together with the assurance of a Ouija board. This improvisational quality invites interpretation by the viewer. Back in the studio, the collages are photographed and printed on an inkjet printer in small signed editions.
